Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.
The one-time leader was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.
This included attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could facilitate a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a paperwork permitting the detention, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his child.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of his "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of planning to request asylum through a embassy office", a declaration said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, the capital city, is situated around 13km from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist US President President Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.
Background on Conviction
He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.
Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which involved plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The plot was stopped because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were detained.
The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to take action, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.
At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 national vote.
