A 60-day voyage through the Australian Coast has been cancelled following the death of an older woman who was abandoned by the vessel on a isolated coastal location.

The passenger had been hiking on the remote island with other travelers from the cruise ship, but parted ways from the party for a rest. The ship sailed away leaving her and came back several hours later after the crew became aware the passenger was not present.

An extensive rescue mission located her body the next day.

Officials are investigating the incident, together with investigators and the medical examiner.

Head of the shipping company stated that travelers and personnel on the vessel were notified that the continuation of the cruise had been cancelled due to the "tragic passing and previous engine troubles".

In a statement, he further stated that travelers would be given a complete reimbursement, and said the company was working "to arrange the return journeys of the travelers via chartered flights".

"We understand from the investigators that it was a exceptionally warm day, and mum took sick on the uphill trek," she stated.

"They requested her to go back, unescorted. Then the ship left, apparently without doing a passenger count.

"At some stage in that chain of events, or soon after, mum succumbed, without company."

Operator Response

Via official communication, the Chief Executive verified that the organization was "collaborating extensively with officials to assist their inquiry".

He stated that the organization was "very regretful that this has happened" and had provided its full support to the relatives.
