Crew Member Discloses Depression In the Wake of Wave of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also featured well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her lab work and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

In the time since fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including elevated attention for her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that crossed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also included leaders in multiple disciplines.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm founded by a Amazon founder.
